HOW DOES A RESIDENTIAL SOLAR PV SYSTEM WORK?
A lot of Lincoln residents are interested in making the switch to solar power, but they are still a little hesitant because they don’t understand how it works. We definitely understand the impulse to hold off from making the switch to solar energy if it’s not clear how it will work. We also understand that solar energy as a concept to those unfamiliar with the advancements the technology deserves some skepticism. So, to add some clarity to the situation and help you make an informed decision, here’s a quick rundown of how solar energy will function in your home.
When the sun shines on the solar panels installed onto your roof or the most desirable part of your property, it creates a direct current, which is the same type of electricity that is produced by everyday batteries where electrons flow in one direction.
The direct current created from the sun’s photons interacting with the silicon cells and fed into a solar inverter that then converts it into an alternating current. We use alternating currents in our homes because they can easily be converted to higher and lower voltages by a transformer.
Once the direct current electricity generated by solar panels has been converted into an alternating current in the solar inverter, it can safely be transferred throughout your home’s wiring to power your appliances, electronic devices and light fixtures. Any surplus electricity is then fed back into the main grid. Should this happen, some electric companies will record the electricity fed into the grid by your system and provide a credit on your bill.
When the solar cells in the panels aren’t producing power, for example at night, your power is supplied through the mains power grid as usual. Your utility provider will charge the usual rate for power used. It’s worth noting that nighttime is practically the only time your solar panels will not be harnessing the sun’s energy. We don’t blame you, but it’ll take more than a bit of cloud cover to block the sun’s energy. When you opt for solar power, your solar panels will still generate electricity even during overcast weather, so you don’t have to worry about being stranded without power.

Because when any piece of machinery relies on moving parts, it is more susceptible to wearing out or breaking down.
